Pearson Test of English (PTE) is an English Language Proficiency examination for non-native English-speaking candidates who aim to study abroad or for immigration purposes. Pearson PTE test is accepted by most foreign universities and colleges all around the world. It is a human-free, computer-based English language skills testing exam with an AI-based automated scoring system. The PTE Academic exam consists of 4 sections i.e. PTE Speaking Section, PTE Writing Section, PTE Reading Section and PTE Listening Section. PTE Reading is one of the 4 sections of the PTE Exam which assesses the flair of the PTE Academic aspirant in reading English. It has 5 different PTE tasks.

PTE Reading Time

The PTE Reading section is 29-30 minutes long. This time is overall and there are no question-wise timings in the Reading module.

PTE Reading Test Format, Question Types and Marks

1. Reading & Writing - Fill in the Blanks (R&W Blanks): In this PTE task, Text appears on-screen with several gaps. Drag words from the box below to fill the gaps.

  • Prompt Length: Text up to 300 words

  • Skills Assessed: Reading and Writing

  • Time to Answer: Not Applicable

  • You need to select the most appropriate words from a drop-down list to restore the text.

  • R&W Blanks is scored as follows:

Correct

1 for each blank

Incorrect

0 for each blank

2. Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers: In this PTE task, after reading the text, answer a multiple-choice question on the content or tone of the text by selecting more than one response.

  • Prompt Length: Text up to 300 words

  • Skills Assessed: Reading

  • Time to Answer: Not Applicable

  • You need to select all the response options that you think are correct from the list of possible options.

  • You will score marks for any correct options but you will lose score points for any incorrect options.

  • MCQ Multiple Answers is scored as follows:

    Correct

    1 for each answer

    Incorrect

    -1 for each answer

    Minimum

    0


3. Re-order Paragraphs (RO): In this PTE Task, several text boxes appear on the screen in random order. Put the text boxes in the correct order.
  • Prompt Length: Text up to 150 words

  • Skills Assessed: Reading

  • Time to Answer: Not Applicable

  • You need to restore the original order of the text by selecting text boxes and dragging them across the screen.

  • Your response to Re-order Paragraphs is judged on your ability to understand the organization and cohesion of an academic text.

  • If all text boxes are in the correct order, you receive the maximum score points for this question type.

  • If one or more text boxes are in the wrong order, partial credit scoring applies.

  • Reorder Paragraph is scored as follows:

    Correct

    1 for each pair

    Incorrect

    0 for each pair

    Minimum

    0



4. Reading - Fill in the Blanks: In this PTE task, the text appears on a screen with several gaps in it. Drag words from the box below to fill the gaps.
  • Prompt Length: Text up to 80 words

  • Skills Assessed: Reading

  • Time to Answer: Not Applicable

  • There is a passage with some missing words. You have a list of words in the blue box that you can use to fill the gaps in the text.

  • There are more words than gaps so you will not use all the words provided.

  • Reading Fill in the Blanks is scored as follows:

    Correct

    1 for each

    Incorrect

    0 for each

5. Multiple Choice, Single Answer: In this PTE question type, answer a multiple-choice question on the content or tone of the text by selecting one response 
after reading the text.
  • Prompt Length: Text up to 300 words

  • Skills Assessed: Reading

  • Time to Answer: Not Applicable

  • There are several possible response options but only one is correct.

  • Your response is scored as either correct or incorrect. No credit is given for no response or an incorrect response.

  • Reading MCQ Single Answer is scored as follows:

    Correct

    1

    Incorrect

    0

PTE Reading Tips and Tricks

  • Focus on the most important questions which are Read Aloud and Reading & Writing Blanks (Drop-down Blanks)

  • Try to get a 70-80% content score in each Read Aloud question. Speak clearly and maintain the flow of the sentence to improve the overall Reading and Speaking PTE score.

  • Try to get an average of 3/5 or 2/4 in each paragraph of R&W Blanks

  • Follow Important Grammar Rules for the Reading Blanks: articles rule, modal auxiliary rule etc.

  • Eliminate the wrong options first and then Guess the correct answer for each blank.

  • Ignore Reading MCQs. Don't waste time on MCQs.

  • Try to get 1 or 2 correct pairs in Reorder Paragraphs. Don't waste more than 2 minutes on one Reorder Paragraph.
