PTE Exam by Pearson is an English Language Proficiency test for non-native English speakers for study abroad and immigration purposes. It is accepted worldwide by leading universities and colleges. PTE is a computer-based English language exam with an automated scoring system. The PTE Academic exam consists of 4 sections i.e. PTE Speaking Section, PTE Writing Section, PTE Reading Section and PTE Listening Section. PTE Speaking is one of the 4 sections of the PTE Exam which assesses the flair of the test-taker in speaking English. PTE Speaking is the only module, which is not scored from other sections. 

PTE Speaking Time

The PTE speaking section is 54-67 minutes long (including PTE Writing Time).

Important: In a real PTE exam, PTE speaking and writing sections come together as a whole section of the exam.


PTE Speaking Test Format, Question Types and Marks

1. Read Aloud (RA): In this PTE Speaking task, text appears on the screen. Read the text aloud.

  • Prompt Length: Text up to 60 words

  • Skills Assessed: Reading and Speaking

  • Time to Answer: Varies by item, depending on the length of the text

  • You have 30–40 seconds to read the text and prepare.

  • If you remain silent for longer than three seconds, the recording will stop.

  • Read Aloud is scored based on 3 parameters: Content, Fluency and Pronunciation

2. Repeat Sentence (RS): In this PTE speaking task, after listening to a recording of a sentence, repeat the sentence.

  • Prompt Length: 3-9 seconds

  • Skills Assessed: Listening and Speaking

  • Time to Answer: 15 seconds

  • Repeat Sentence is scored based on 3 parameters: Content, Fluency and Pronunciation

3. Describe Image (DI): In this PTE task, an image appears on the screen. Describe the image in detail.
  • Prompt Length: Not Applicable

  • Skills Assessed: Speaking

  • Time to Answer: 40 seconds

  • You have 25 seconds to study the image and prepare your response.

  • Describe Image is scored based on 3 parameters: Content, Fluency and Pronunciation

4. Retell Lecture (RL): In this PTE task, after listening to or watching a lecture, re-tell the lecture in your own words.
  • Prompt Length: Up to 90 seconds

  • Skills Assessed: Listening and Speaking

  • Time to Answer: 40 seconds

  • The audio begins to play automatically. You may also see an image related to the audio.

  • After the audio finishes, you have 10 seconds to prepare.

  • Tip: While the audio is playing, you can take notes on the erasable note board provided.

  • Retell Lecture is scored based on 3 parameters: Content, Fluency and Pronunciation

5. Answer Short Question (ASQ): In this PTE task, after listening to a question, answer with a single word or a few words.
  • Prompt Length: 3-9 seconds

  • Skills Assessed: Listening and Speaking

  • Time to Answer: 10 seconds

  • The audio begins to play automatically. You may also see an image.

  • Speak into the microphone immediately (there is no short tone) and answer the question with one or a few words.

  • If you remain silent for longer than three seconds, the recording will stop.

  • ASQ is scored as follows:

PTE Speaking Tips and Tricks

    • Practice at least 20 Read Aloud questions daily. Covering 50-70% the of Content is okay but focus on pronunciation and fluency the most as it will help you to achieve a higher score in the PTE Speaking section.
    • Practice at least 30 Repeat Sentence questions daily. If you can't remember the complete full sentence then frame your answer using 3-5 words from the audio. Maintain fluency and pronunciation the most as it will help you to achieve a higher score in the PTE Speaking section.
