Use Below Grammar Rules to solve PTE Reading module blanks i.e. Reading and Writing Blanks (Drop Down Blanks), Reading Blanks (Drag & Drop Blanks):

1. If there is a blank right after an article (a/an/the), there will always be a 'noun'. 

  • Formula: Article (a/an/the) + Noun
  • Example: Gerard had a friend who helped him in his time of need. 

2. If there is a blank between the article (a/an/the) and the noun, it will always be an 'adjective'. 

  • Formula: Article (a/an/the) + Adjective + Noun
  • Example: Steve played a great role in the success of his team. 

3. If there is a blank right after a possessive pronoun (his, their, her, our, mine, your, etc.), there will always be a 'noun'. 

  • Formula: Possessive Pronoun + Noun
  • Example: We will use his car tomorrow. 

4. If there is a blank between a possessive pronoun (his, their, her, our, mine, your, etc.) and a noun, there will always be an 'adjective'. 

  • Formula: Possessive Pronoun + Adjective + Noun
  • Example: She admired your stellar performance in the last month.

5. If there is a blank right after the helping verb (HV) is/am/are/was/were, there will either be the 'third form' or 'continuous form of the verb' (with 'ing').

  • Formula: HV + Third or Continuous Form of Verb
  • Example-1: John is playing football. (Active voice) 
  • Example-2: We were stranded in the mountains because of land sliding. (Passive voice) 

6. If there is a blank right after the words be/been, there will either be the 'third form' or 'continuous form of the verb' (with 'ing').

  • Formula: be/been + Third or Continuous Form of Verb
  • Example-1: They have been trying to solve the problem for two hours.
  • Example-2: The project will be completed by next month. 

7. If there is a blank right after the word 'to', it will be the first form of the verb'.

  • Formula: To + First Form of the Verb
  • Example-1: I am here to represent my client.
  • Example-2: Certain measures must be taken to rectify the situation.

Note: Here, VERB1 means the first form of the verb, VERB2 means the second form of the verb, VERB3 means the third form of the verb, VERB+ING means verb with ing e.g. playing, studying.
  • TO + VERB1  (CORRECT)
  • TO + VERB2 or VERB3 or VERB+ING (INCORRECT)

  • DO/DOES/DID + VERB1 (CORRECT)
  • DO/DOES/DID + VERB2 or VERB3 or VERB+ING (INCORRECT)

  • IS/AM/ARE + VERB+ING (CORRECT) (ACTIVE FORM)
  • IS/AM/ARE + VERB1 or VERB2 (INCORRECT)
  • IS/AM/ARE + VERB3 (CORRECT) (PASSIVE FORM)

  • WAS/WERE + VERB+ING (CORRECT) (ACTIVE FORM)
  • WAS/WERE + VERB1 or VERB2 (INCORRECT)
  • WAS/WERE+VERB3 (CORRECT) (PASSIVE FORM)

  • HAS/HAVE/HAD + VERB3 (CORRECT)
  • HAS/HAVE/HAD + VERB1 or VERB2 or VERB+ING (INCORRECT)

  • IS/ARE/AM/WAS/WERE + BEING + VERB3 (CORRECT)
  • IS/AM/ARE/WAS/WERE + BEING + VERB1 or VERB2 or VERB+ING (INCORRECT)

  • MODALS + VERB1 (CORRECT)
  • MODALS + VERB2 or VERB3 or VERB+ING (INCORRECT)
  • MODALS + BE + VERB3 or VERB+ING (CORRECT)

  • HELPING VERB + BE/BEEN + VERB3 or VERB+ING (CORRECT)
  • HELPING VERB + BE/BEEN + VERB1 or VERB2 (INCORRECT)
  • HELPING VERB + BEING + VERB3 (CORRECT)
  • HELPING VERB + BEING + VERB1 or VERB2 or VERB+ING (INCORRECT)

  • GERUND RULE

    • BY / WHILE / AFTER / FOR / OF / IN / AT + VERB+ING (CORRECT)

    • Examples:
      a. WHILE DRIVING THE CAR, I SAW SOMEONE FIGHTING ON THE ROAD.
      b. I WAS WAITING FOR HIM AT THE BUS TERMINAL.
      c. BY PROVIDING PROPER EDUCATION TO THE LOCALS, GOVT CAN UPLIFT THEIR LIVING STANDARD.
      d. AFTER ASSESSING THE WHOLE GRAPH, SALES SHOW AN INCREASING TREND.

  • SINGULAR + SINGULAR or VERB1(S, ES) (CORRECT)
  • SINGULAR + PLURAL or VERB1 or VERB3 or VERB+ING (INCORRECT)
  • SINGULAR + VERB2 (CORRECT)

    • Examples:
      a. A CHAIR IS MADE OF WOOD.
      b. A BOY PLAYS IN THE PLAYGROUND.
      c. SHE ATE MANGOES.

  • PLURAL + PLURAL or VERB1 or VERB2  (CORRECT)
  • PLURAL + VERB1(S, ES) or VERB3 or VERB+ING (INCORRECT)
    • Examples:
      a. MANY STUDENTS ARE PRESENT IN THE LAB.
      b. THESE POLICIES PLAY A SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF SOCIETY.
